The annual profection

The annual profection is one of the most elegant predictive techniques of the tradition, and also one of the easiest to understand. Its idea is simple: each year of life activates one house of the chart, in order, following a twelve-year cycle. The year you are born activates house 1; on turning one, it moves to house 2; the next year, house 3; and so on up to 12, to begin again.

Working out which house applies to you is a matter of a division. Divide your age by twelve and keep the remainder. At 34, 34 divided by 12 leaves a remainder of 10: house 10 active. At 42, the remainder is 6: house 6. At 36, the remainder is 0, which corresponds to house 12. That house is the focus of the year: its themes become more prominent, more active, during the twelve months from one birthday to the next.

But the profection does not activate only a house: it also activates a planet, the so-called lord of the year. It is the planet that rules the sign of that house. If the active house has Sagittarius on its entry, the lord of the year is Jupiter, and that planet becomes the director of the period. Its state in your birth chart, its position and the transits it receives during the year weigh especially on what that year brings.

What it is for: the profection gives the "theme of the year" with notable precision. It does not predict events —it does not say what will happen to you— but where energy concentrates: in which area of life the focus lies. Combined with the transits of the moment, it lets you read time with judgement without falling into determinism. It is, moreover, the perfect gateway to the more complex predictive techniques.

AstroAtlas 3i calculates your profection and your lord of the year from your chart and your age, with your real houses.

The profection marks the annual rhythm. The next system marks the great periods of life, each governed by a different planet: the Persian Firdaria.
