What the Persian Firdaria is: the time-lords that divide your life
The Persian Firdaria (or alfridaria) is a predictive system that divides life into successive periods, each ruled by a planet according to a fixed order that adds up to seventy-five years. The planet of each period tints the symbolic climate of that stage; its sub-periods nuance the detail. It does not announce events: it marks chapters.
The Firdaria is a system of planetary periods inherited from medieval Persian astrology. Where the profection distributes the years one by one, the Firdaria divides life into great blocks —of several years each— governed by a specific planet, and within each block there are sub-periods ruled by the others. It is like having a background planet throughout a long stage, with nuances changing within it.
How is the Firdaria calculated?
The periods are laid out in a fixed sequence with years assigned to each planet: Sun 10, Venus 8, Mercury 13, Moon 9, Saturn 11, Jupiter 12 and Mars 7, plus the North Node 3 and the South Node 2 — seventy-five years in all. Each major period is then subdivided into sub-periods. AstroAtlas 3i calculates it with its sub-periods on your real birth date.
Each planet directs a fixed number of years: the Sun ten, Venus eight, Mercury thirteen, the Moon nine, Saturn eleven, Jupiter twelve, Mars seven. The full sequence covers about seventy-five years, and starts with a different planet depending on whether the chart is diurnal —born by day— or nocturnal —born by night. That detail of day or night is key, and connects with the notion of sect from the traditional school.
AstroAtlas 3i determines your active Firdaria period from your birth date and the diurnal or nocturnal character of your chart.
Why does it change depending on whether you were born by day or by night?
The order of the periods depends on whether your birth was diurnal or nocturnal. In diurnal charts the series begins with the Sun; in nocturnal ones, with the Moon. From there both run the same planetary wheel, but you enter life through a different chapter, and that reorders your whole symbolic chronology.
What are the sub-periods of the Firdaria?
Each major period is divided into smaller stretches ruled in turn by other planets. The major period gives the underlying theme of that long stage; the sub-period refines what is activated within it. Reading both together —major ruler and minor ruler— is what makes the technique precise and not generic.
What the Firdaria explains so well is why some stages of life have such a different "flavour" from others. It is not only that the circumstances change: the planet directing the period changes. A Saturn stage brings responsibility, limit and maturation; a Jupiter one, expansion, opportunity and meaning; a Venus one, an orientation toward bonds, values and pleasure. The sub-period refines the nuance: a stretch of Jupiter within a long Saturn period can bring a breath of openness within a more demanding stage.
What is the Firdaria for in practice?
It places which planetary chapter you are in and which comes next, so it orders the long story of a life. Not every period produces an event, but it does describe the dominant symbolic pressure. It gains strength combined with transits, profections and the solar return: the Firdaria gives the frame; the other techniques, the detail of the year.
What it is for: the Firdaria gives the long-term backdrop. It tells you which energy governs this stage of your life, independently of the momentary transits. Reading it alongside the profection and the transits gives an image of time at three scales —the stage, the year and the moment— that few techniques match.
The profection gives the year, the Firdaria gives the stage. One third view of time remains, the most sophisticated: the peak periods of Zodiacal Releasing.
