The twelve signs of the zodiac
The signs are the first alphabet of astrology. They are twelve equal sectors into which the band of sky travelled by the Sun, the Moon and the planets is divided. When we say someone "has the Sun in Scorpio", we mean that, at the moment of their birth, the Sun was in that particular stretch of the sky.
It helps to understand what a sign does and what it does not. A sign is not a personality or a destiny: it is a quality. It colours the way whatever falls in it is expressed. The same planet —say Mars, the function of action— behaves differently depending on the sign it occupies: direct and impatient in Aries, methodical and patient in Capricorn. The planet says what function operates; the sign says in what manner.
So as not to learn them as twelve loose labels, it helps to know that each sign arises from combining two things: an element and a modality. The four elements describe the underlying temperament —Fire (drive and vision), Earth (body and pragmatism), Air (mind and relationship), Water (emotion and depth). The three modalities describe the way of acting —Cardinal (initiates), Fixed (sustains), Mutable (adapts). Each sign is a unique combination of both. That is why Aries and Leo, both Fire, are so different: one initiates, the other sustains.
With that framework, the twelve:
- Aries (Cardinal Fire) — the drive that sets off. Direct energy, initiative, the urge to begin.
- Taurus (Fixed Earth) — matter that holds. Stability, a sense of body and worth, patience.
- Gemini (Mutable Air) — the mind that connects. Curiosity, words, versatility.
- Cancer (Cardinal Water) — the emotion that protects. Sensitivity, memory, a need for home.
- Leo (Fixed Fire) — the drive that shines. Expression, warmth, the wish to be seen.
- Virgo (Mutable Earth) — matter that refines. Analysis, care for detail, a vocation for service.
- Libra (Cardinal Air) — the mind that balances. Relationship, aesthetic sense, a search for harmony.
- Scorpio (Fixed Water) — the emotion that deepens. Intensity, depth, a capacity for transformation.
- Sagittarius (Mutable Fire) — the drive that expands. A search for meaning, horizon, freedom.
- Capricorn (Cardinal Earth) — matter that builds. Structure, ambition, patience with the long game.
- Aquarius (Fixed Air) — the mind that innovates. Originality, a future-facing gaze, a sense of community.
- Pisces (Mutable Water) — the emotion that dissolves. Broad sensitivity, compassion, intuition.
These descriptions are not verdicts about how a person is. They are the tone of each sign, the nuance it lends to any planet or point that inhabits it. A complete chart mixes several signs at once, and from that mix comes the richness of every map.
The signs tell the "how". To know the "where" —in which area of life each thing plays out— you have to look at the twelve houses.
